To determine the dose-response of the various combinations of nifedipine GITS (gastrointestinal therapeutic system) and candesartan as compared to monotherapy and placebo based on the blood pressure (BP) lowering effects (mean seated diastolic blood pressure [MSDBP]) of a once daily regimen in subjects with World Health Organization (WHO) classification Grades 1 and 2 essential hypertension (MSDBP ≥ 95 mmHg and < 110 mmHg).

Inclusion criteria
