Many scientific publications have found that certain characteristics tend to occur together in patients, for example, diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and being overweight. When several of these characteristics are present in the same patient, it is referred to as the metabolic syndrome. Several scientific studies have found that the metabolic syndrome may cause benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) or increase the severity of this condition. This study will describe the occurrence of the metabolic syndrome in men with and without BPH and will provide some initial information concerning whether or not the occurrence these two conditions might be related.
